What Is Aerial Yoga?

Aerial yoga is a practice that incorporates an aerial hammock (also referred to as silks or swing) to enhance a floor-based yoga practice, and adds the elements of suspension and decompression. The hammock provides support to the yoga practitioner so that they can perform poses that are normally difficult to accomplish, like back bends and inversions. Firefly aerial classes incorporate both grounded and lifted elements for an innovative, challenging and total body workout!

Aerial yoga is safe inversion therapy with zero compression on the spine! Hanging upside down decompresses the vertebrate of your spine from the long-term effects of gravity. It will help create space between your vertebral discs for the nerves of your spinal cord. Realign and open up your physical body by using gravity!

You do not need to be a circus star, lifelong yogi, or natural-born acrobat to come play! Students of all levels will build strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, coordination, and body awareness as you learn to flip, fly, and flow through aerial yoga sequences. Take your fitness to the next level. Use gravity to your advantage—Give yourself much deeper stretches, give yourself full back extensions, give yourself freedom in the silks.

Firefly Current Aerial Offerings:

Flip & Fly Fundamentals Our Flip & Fly Fundamentals class will help you establish a solid foundation in this unique suspension system using our Gravatonics swings. It is designed to give you a secure and detailed understanding of aerial yoga fundamentals while enjoying a new perspective on the world! During this 75-minute session students will explore a practice of both elevation and grounding to increase flexibility, strength and improve structural alignment. You will also enjoy the ease of inversions in a fun and playful way. This class will leave you feeling completely relaxed and ready for bed.

Release and Restore This class is a gentle and therapeutic system of muscular release and a soft, centered way to build core strength and increase joint mobility.  Decompression of the spine and major joints allows for proper posture alignment through relaxation rather than effort while inversion therapy counteracts spinal disc pain, joint pain, and pain from muscular spasms.

Fly Strong This class is a complete body workout as aerial yoga moves ask you to move and be aware of your entire body in 3 dimensional space, the result is overall muscle redefinition and toning while strengthening and regenerating skeletal joints.  We will use progressive conditioning and circuit training to keep you working toward your aerial skills and overall mastery of self in space.

How Do I Prepare for a Firefly Aerial Class?

Bring a yoga mat to class. Wear sleeves that cover your armpits and pants that cover the backs of your knees. Wear snug fitting clothing. Cotton or cotton blend fabric is best (non-slippery). Avoid shorts or very baggy clothing. Please refrain from wearing perfumes, lotions, oils, and jewelry that may snag the fabric, or clothing with snaps, zippers or buttons. We also recommend that you avoid eating or drinking acidic foods and liquids an hour prior to class.

Please arrive early to set the height of your hammock with the teachers’ support and to do any necessary paperwork. Classes’ start on time and unfortunately late arrivals will not be allowed to enter once the class has started since the swings require setup.

Precautions:

Please be careful with yourself, we want you to have fun and enjoy your experience here at Firefly, but there are some contraindications (precautions) to be aware of in this practice. Please do not practice until you have consulted with your physician if any of the following apply to you:

  • Vertigo
  • Inner ear conditions
  • Severe balance issues
  • Severe muscle spasms
  • Severe neck or back pain
  • Recent surgery
  • Osteoporosis
  • Artificial hips
  • Glaucoma
  • Heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Very high or low blood pressure
  • Propensity for fainting
  • Recent concussion or head injury
  • Recent stroke
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Severe arthritis
  • Head cold, flu or sinusitis
  • Hiatal hernia
  • Disc herniation
  • Pregnancy
  • Cerebral sclerosis
  • Radiculitis
  • Botox (within 24 hours)

Cancellation Policy:  

Because we can only accommodate a small number of students we must implement a strong cancellation policy. Space is limited and often there is a wait list.  If you find yourself unable to attend a class you have signed up for, please alert us as soon as possible.

Cancellations made 4 or more hours prior to the start of class will receive a full refund. Any cancels within 4 hours of the class start time are considered a “late cancel”. No-shows and late cancels will be charged for the full class fee if we are unable to fill your spot.
