In just one class, you will sweat, smile, work, de-stress and improve your overall health, spirit and self-image more than you can imagine! With a dedicated practice, you will benefit from increased stamina, flexibility, strength and balance. The surprise will come when you discover you have increased concentration, patience, determination and self control. Hot yoga will restore your body. It is a true prescription for overall health. Hot yoga can relieve the symptoms of many chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, and more. Other benefits of hot yoga include: accelerated weight loss, stress reduction, improved balance, more developed muscle tone, lower blood pressure, headache relief, improved concentration and a greater love of life!
External heat within our studio spaces is used to warm the muscles, help prevent injuries, and allow a deeper workout. Sweating is a side benefit because it cleanses the body by flushing toxins through the skin. We closely manage both the heat and the humidity in our studio. Hot yoga, when done regularly can be life-changing. You will find yourself craving better food, sleeping more soundly, and feeling a general sense of health and well-being.
At Firefly Hot Yoga, we have a slightly different way of heating the space. The room is heated to 100+ degrees using far infrared radiant heat panels with approximately 40%+ humidity. The panels allow us to heat the room quickly. You will notice that objects in the room will feel warmer–including you! It feels like a heat you would feel when you are out in the sun.
Have no fear! The most common misconception that prevents people from coming to yoga classes is that the student must be flexible. Yoga is not about how flexible you are; rather it’s about moving and optimizing your body, spine, and mind to develop and increase your strength, balance, flexibility, general health and happiness. With time, practice and patience, you will most likely benefit from an increase in your flexibility.
Your first class is typically the most challenging, regardless of what physical shape you are in. You work hard, everything is new, the body is detoxifying, and the heat can be tiring. But keep heart! Most new students claim a great feeling of well-being after just one class. Usually by the third class, they are hooked on the practice of hot yoga. Unlike other forms of physical conditioning, yoga can be practiced every day.
Drink plenty of water before class and try not to eat anything more than a light snack for two-hours before practice. Bring water, a mat, and a bath, beach, or yoga towel. If you forget any of those items, don’t worry. We have water and hydration drinks for sale and rent towels and mats.
Dress in light, comfortable clothing. No shoes or socks in the studio. Men usually wear running or board shorts along with a tank top, or they go shirtless. Personal items should be left outside of the studio room. Many people prefer to leave their phones, wallets, and jewelry in the car, though we do have cubbies available, and the front door is locked during class.
There are a couple of ways to get signed up for a class. First you need to have an account on MindBody. You can do that by using this link and click on the “sign up” button at the top right corner of the page. Another option that is really easy to use once you have your MindBody login setup is to download the MindBody Connect app and link it to your login. MindBody Connect allows you to schedule classes from your smart phone with the touch of a couple buttons. Here is a link to get the MindBody Connect app. Please note that you still need to get to the studio 15 minutes before the class start time to hold your spot. If you are running late, please call to let us know so we can hold your spot. Reserved spots will be released on a first come basis 10 minutes prior to class starting.
All levels practice together. An advanced practitioner is usually so focused on their own practice that he or she is nearly unaware of what is happening around them. For the beginner, plenty of verbal instruction is given, but if you are uncertain as to what to do, a quick peek at the more experienced practitioner in the class will clear things up. We do have a Yoga Fundamentals class, as well as Warming Up to Hot Yoga on the schedule . These offer lower heat and a gentle introduction to the poses for those who want to take it slow. Though you are encouraged to move at your own pace in every class. We never put any pressure on you. The atmosphere in our classes is loving and inclusive, so no worries.
There are no set rules for how often to practice. Some students come almost every day while others come one to three times a week. The benefits of hot yoga can be felt after one class, so we feel that you will find the number that works best for your body, schedule, and life.
Talk with the instructor before the class to discuss your injury and limitations. We always try to offer modifications, but this will allow the instructor to plan or assist you during class should you need it. We always encourage modifications and adjustments to the postures or flow as needed. You know your body better than anyone so never hesitate to express that kindness and self-love to yourself at any point in your practice. We are proud to encourage no judgment of those who are choosing to respect their own bodies first.
You can find showers at our Firefly studio, downtown Lansing as well as at Lansing Hot Yoga. At Firefly, we have two bathrooms and one shower. Lansing Hot Yoga offers two men’s and two women’s showers. They all are currently being used on a first-come/ first-served basis and we ask that you try to respect the line by keeping it short and quick when there is one. All of our studios provide multiple changing room equipped with large mirrors. There are plugs available for items like hairdryers and curling irons etc.
Our barre class has been developed to combine the strength and toning of a barre class, floor pilates, and other exercises you can do from your mat, and the flow, flexibility building, and bliss of a yoga class. Our barre room is typically heated in the mid 80s – 90 degrees.
Bring your yoga mat (for floor work) and water bottle – if you forget, we always have everything to rent/buy. The rest of your equipment such as hand weights, resistance bands, blocks, etc. will be provided by us. As well as your positive attitude. 🙂
When attending a barre class, it’s not a bad idea to dress in layers (light, long sleeve, and tank) or anything that you feel comfortable getting sweaty in. Bottoms such as leggings or capris are the most comfortable. Sticky socks are recommended but not required.
Music is generally upbeat and loud – not necessarily censored 🙂 . Expect a mix of pop, hip hop, alternative, and anything else that can get you through the body shaking parts!
Results vary by individual, but you should FEEL a difference after 8-10 classes and SEE a difference after 20-30 classes. Based on our experience, by attending barre 2-3 times per week, you are likely to experience your jeans fitting you differently after a few weeks! Amp your results up by adding hot yoga into that mix.
Our barre classes are for everyBODY, no matter the experience level, or gender for that matter. We believe that everyone can benefit from a class.
Arrive at least 15 minutes before class so you can situate your mat in the room where you like it and begin stretching out, meditating, and/or adjusting to the room’s heat and humidity.
The studio classroom is peaceful and quiet. If you’d like to carry on conversations with those around you, please remain in the lobby until you’ve finished talking. Some students practice yoga in a meditative state, so please honor and respect everyone’s practice by remaining quiet and peaceful inside the studio space.
We find that practice is more enjoyable when we have a few necessities at our disposal like a mat, yoga towel, and water. We do have mats and towels available for rental or purchase in the lobby and we also have a water cooler and bottled water for purchase at the front desk.
As the room begins to fill up, we encourage you to work together with those around you to adjust your mat, creating spaces for new mats when needed. When class fills up, you may only have a few inches on each side of your mat; instructors will help you adjust so that you won’t disturb others as you practice.
Avoid wearing strong perfumes or scents to class as this may affect the sinuses and allergies of those around you. You will sweat it all off and out in the first ten minutes anyway!
Gather your things, pick up any trash or water bottles, and return straps, blocks, and spray cleaner bottles to the side of the room before you exit. If you have a rental mat, please clean it prior to returning it to the front desk.
Once you’re in the room, try to stay there until class is completely finished. If you need to leave mid-way through, please inform the instructor in advance. We lock the doors during each class, so if you’re planning to leave during class, the instructor will need to let you out. Plan for these exits in advance to disturb practice as little as possible.
Each instructor will guide you through your practice in her own way, so be mindful and respectful to each person’s style and technique. Our guides welcome constructive criticism after each class; find them in the lobby and give them feedback. Instructors also welcome gratitude, so thank them as you leave.
You may feel ready to talk and walk around, but some students like to seal off their practice in complete silence. If you must leave before the final savasana is complete, please do so as quietly as possible and we ask that you refrain from cleaning your mat in the studio and instead use the space in the lobby to clean it. Once in savasana, please do your best to stay for the full 3-5 minutes. This pose is as important as the others, if not more so.
